Tea Party Protesters Hurl Spit and the N-Word

House of Representatives Democrat James Clyburn of South Carolina said that he has not heard people saying the kind of things that the Right Wing Tea Party Protesters were shouting since the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Most of the hate speech was directed at the passage of the health care bill, but demonstrators attacked Black Representatives with the N-word and spat upon them. The three Black lawmakers that were the recipients of Right Wing hatred were Representatives AndrĂ© Carson (D- Indiana), John Louis (D- Georgia) and Emmanuel Cleaver II (D- Missouri). Representative Lewis’ aide said that a Tea Party protester spat on him.
An aide to Mr. Lewis, a leader of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, said that as he walked to the Capitol, Mr. Lewis was called racial slurs. A spokesman for Mr. Cleaver said that a protester spat on the congressman as he was walking to the Capitol. Barney Frank (D- Massachusetts) was confronted by anti- gay slurs as he approached the Capital. One of the protesters who spat on a Representative was arrested.

Representative Carson is reported to have said:

“It was like going into the time machine with John Lewis,” said Carson, a large former police officer who said he wasn’t frightened but worried about the 70-year-old Lewis, who is twice his age. “He said it reminded him of another time.” Source

The slur slinging continues today as members of the House of Representatives have gathered to cast the historic vote on the health care reform bill. Nancy Pelosi, together with the African American lawmakers defiantly walked through the crowd of angry protesters in a manner that was reminiscent of Civil Rights protests from decades before.

Today is the day America. Health care reform is within our grasp.  House Democrats have shown maintained dignity and demonstrated their resolve in the face of racial slurs and spit.

The Tea Party Protesters have shown their true colors; not red, white and blue but hate, fear, and bigotry.
